The system is currently setup to prevent anyone with an active membership from purchasing a new one, to avoid the issue of overlapping memberships and one member buying multiple memberships.
Once you renew, then you will be on a subscription which will auto renew each year, until you cancel it.
So you only have to remember to renew your NIHBS membership one more time and after that you can forget it.
